HOW TO ADD CHAPTER TIMESTAMPS ON YOUTUBE VIDEOS DESCRIPTION TO BOOST MAXIMUM AUDIENCE RETENTION FOR MORE VIEWS AND SUBSCRIBERS

We all hate it when people comment the timestamps in our videos.
If you're a Youtuber with typically long videos, you would be familiar with comments like
"Video starts at 1:51" or
"Main thing at 4:16"

This is just a polite way of saying that before that timestamp, whatever you're saying is meaningless.

WHAT ARE TIMESTAMPS?

YouTube just rolled out a new game changing feature which enables you to add Chapter Timestamps to your videos.

When you add timestamps, YouTube will cut up your video into chapters. This way, you can divide your video into sections and your audience can know what to expect at each point or go straight to the chapter/part they want to watch.

For example, if you're doing a 'how to' video, and the first two steps are basic steps that everybody knows, The chapter timestamp feature will enable them to jump to the part they want to watch.

HOW DOES THIS HELP AUDIENCE RETENTION?

Audience retention is the ability for a video to be captivating enough that people actually watch it to the end.
You may ask: "How does this help me?"
You may think that if a viewer skips your video, YouTube will not count the view but in the logical sense, YouTube will start counting from where you skipped to.
It is better for your audience to skip to a part they like and finish the video than for your audience to become bored and exit your videos because the first part does not appeal to them.
Even if what they're looking for is actually contained in the 2nd half of your video, they won't stay long enough to see it. Hence the Chapter Timestamp Feature.
Do you understand it now?

HOW DO YOU ADD TIMESTAMPS?
There is a very specific way to set up your description section in order for your timestamps to work.
The Rules are:

1. Your timestamp can be anywhere in your description box, either at the top, bottom or middle.

2. You have to have at least 3 chapters for the timestamps to work.

3. Your first timestamp has to be the '0:00' timestamp. If your timestamp starts from '2:46' or '0:30' it will not work. So it's better to leave it as an Intro, hook or the name of the particular video.

4. Your timestamp has to have at least 3 letters in it or else it will not work. Use words to title your timestamp.
Be very descriptive in your Timestamps. Let people know what they're watching/going to watch. Don't just put 1 & 2 as the titles or this will not work.

6. Choose your timestamp title very carefully because whatever you write on the beside the timestamps is what is going to show up on the chapter. As people are going through the timeline, whatever you wrote beside the timestamp in the description section is what will show up as the title of the chapter. So you want to have a very eye catching title that will make people want to watch your video or this will work against you.

And that's all for CHAPTER TIMESTAMPS on YouTube.
